Chapter Seventeen

I felt my pulse increase as I realized what was about to happen. Even though I knew this was happening, I couldn’t stop it. I watched as Reed’s body jerked from each bullet. His eyes widened in shock as his body began to fall to the floor. I screamed, unable to hold back my terror. He held onto my arms, using what strength he had to keep himself up. The Agents came running, trying to push me away, but I turned to Liam, my eyes full of anger. “Keep them away.” My voice didn’t sound like my own, but I suddenly knew what I had to do.

Laying Reed down on the floor, I stared at him, tears running down my cheeks. I could feel my desire to take him to the other side increasing. He was scared, but also in awe at what he saw in me. “So beautiful, Sin.”

Glaring, I took hold of his chin. “You aren’t going to die.”

Reed tried to laugh, but winced in pain. I popped open his coat, staring at the bright red stains on his white shirt. He was going to die; there was no way to save him. Even though he put me through hell all these years, I still had some love for him. My heart was breaking into a million pieces watching his soul waving for me to take it.

“Don’t you know some kind of magic, Reed? You’re a damn Warlock!” I cried.

“Sin, I can still die like everyone else who is human. I have some healing abilities, but whoever just shot me placed a spell on the bullets. They wanted to make sure I was dead.” Blood was starting to come from his mouth. He was starting to breathe slower now, his gaze becoming far off as his lungs filled with fluid.

Fury filled me as I realized Seth probably did this. Best friend or not, he was going to pay for this.

Tears fell from my face onto Reed’s. He blinked up at me with an expression of concern. “Don’t cry.”

I grabbed his soul into my hands, trying to shove it back into his body where it belonged, but it was like fighting a brick wall. It tried to wind its way up my arm, but I shook it off, screaming at it to go back. The life in Reed’s eyes was disappearing the more I touched his soul. Freaking out, I tried to shake it off, but it was stuck to me like a spider’s web.

Then Lucifer showed up, crouching down beside me, looking concerned. “You need to take him.”

“No!” I shouted.

Then behind him appeared Aden. “Let him go, he is just a human.”

More anger swelled in me. “I am Death! I decide when it is time!” I snarled, feeling the scythe come into my hand.

Aden ignored my yelling. “The scythe helps you cut the soul faster. Use it, make his misery end, child.” Aden’s blue eyes held little emotion over the scene happening before us.

I didn’t want to let go, and no one was going to tell me to.
